Four international and five German startups form the second batch of STARBUZZ Digital Commerce & Logistics Accelerator

Mülheim an der Ruhr, December 22, 2017. Nine startups were selected during Live Pitch Day of STARBUZZ Digital Commerce & Logistics Accelerator on December 21, taking place at the national headquarter of ALDI SÜD, to form the accelerator‘s second batch. The admitted startups – four international and five German teams – will enter the acceleration program in January 2018.

The startups were selected out of 12 finalists that were invited to pitch in front of a high-ranking jury of STARBUZZ partner companies, including representatives of ALDI SÜD, Tengelmann Ventures, Lidl E-Commerce International, Allegro Invest / Fressnapf, T-Systems International, TechHub Europe, NRW.BANK, Hochschule Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, Mülheim & Business GmbH and other companies. Live Pitch Day is the final stage of the accelerator’s startup selection process.

The nine admitted startups now form the second batch of STARBUZZ startups that will enter the program in early January 2018. To speed up their go-to-market process and to scale their business models, the teams will be supported by the accelerator, its partnering companies and organizations for the duration of three months.

“The high quality of applications and the diverse business models of the admitted startups show the huge potential of new digital business models in retail, ecommerce and logistics. We are happy to have four international startups in the second batch that will surely bring new perspectives to the table and, thus, enrich the dialogues among the startups and with our partnering companies. The interest in STARBUZZ also shows the strong position of the region in retail, ecommerce and logistics and the role of the German market with its numerous internationally leading companies”, states Thomas Müller, STARBUZZ Program Manager at Mülheim & Business GmbH.

The admitted startups will enter the program in Mülheim an der Ruhr in January. Besides the intensive coaching and mentoring from experts of partnering companies, the teams receive free office space and an infrastructure where they just need to “plug in”. Together with the four startups of the first batch, they will work hard on their business models and their go-to-market strategy and its execution until the end of March 2018. The results of the hard and intensive work will be presented by all thirteen teams of batches #1 and #2 during the first STARBUZZ demo day in spring 2018. Here, the startups will pitch in front of investors and potential corporate partners to convince them of their solutions and visions.

It allows to offer fulfillment services for hundreds e-commerce companies. Linker e-Commerce Fulfillment Cloud reduces customer onboarding time and costs, automates processes and billing. Although the company was established only this year, it has already gained the trust of international logistics companies. Linker processes thousands of orders and shipments worldwide.

 

onsuma GmbH, Germany

onsuma is a meta platform for online grocery shopping that compares the offers of various shops, optimizes customers’ weekly shopping carts and mediates them the right shops for their final order. To achieve this, onsuma combines user-centric approaches with machine learning routines in order to customize and accelerate the online grocery shopping experience.

 

RoboCV LLC, Russia

The purpose of RoboCV is the development of robotic systems capable to replace persons in routine and inefficient warehouse logistics tasks. The main customers of the company's products are warehouse operators (3PL), retailers and other organizations interested in increasing the efficiency of warehousing processes. At the moment, the proportion of automated equipment used in warehouses is very low, and existing solutions do not provide consumers with the right quality and performance.

 

sellfio (tarent solutions GmbH), Germany

Sellfio is a mobile scan & go app. Running on the customer's smartphone, it enables shopping and payment in physical stores while bypassing the traditional cash register. Customers benefit from reduced waiting times and retailers enjoy higher throughput in the checkout process.

 

Shipvio s.r.o., Czech Republic

Shipvio creates new commercial opportunities for the logistics industry and removes potential loss for carriers as well as for shippers. The Shipvio Zero Loss Marketplace is the place where shipments are matched with the spare capacity of trucks. This leads to average savings of 20% in transportation costs for shippers and to extra revenues for carriers. The Shipvio marketplace also helps to significantly cut exhausting communication, to increase overall transparency and allows both parties to save time.

 

sigo GmbH, Germany

E-CargoBike-Sharing in a fully automatic system. With this system, people can easily and spontaneously borrow an E-CargoBike via an app or customer card in order to make purchases for example.

Mülheim an der Ruhr, December 4, 2017. At the official kick-off event of STARBUZZ Digital Commerce & Logistics Accelerator, more than 120 corporate and startup representatives gathered at the long-established 'Tengelmann Campus' in Mülheim an der Ruhr.   

Four startups are currently accelerated by STARBUZZ as the program’s first batch: The startups are advised by experts and mentors from partnering companies of STARBUZZ in order to speed up their go-to-market process and to sharpen and scale their business model. STARBUZZ is located at the Tengelmann Campus.

At the accelerator kick-off event, the attendees experienced interesting keynote speeches of Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister of Economic Affairs, Innovation, Digitization and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Karl-Erivan W. Haub, CEO and Managing Partner of Tengelmann Group, and Dr. Kai Hudetz, CEO of IFH Institut für Handelsforschung GmbH. 

"Digital business models and platforms take retail by storm and the 'Internet of Things' revolutionizes the logistics sector. We need to be at the forefront of this development. With STARBUZZ and its more than 35 partnering companies, we have created a hub that is not only of high importance to the future development of Mülheim as a traditional hotspot in commerce, but also for the region and the State of NRW as well as the industry sectors that the program focuses on", stated Ulrich Scholten, Lord Mayor of the City of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
 
Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart joined in on the importance for the region and the state: "Accelerators like STARBUZZ are tailored to meet the needs of startups and support the development and advancement of their business models. These innovative impulses in digital commerce and logistics strengthen the overall business location and generate an appeal far beyond the region."

As one of Germany’s leading venture capital investors, Karl-Erivan W. Haub outlined in his keynote 'Tengelmann Reloaded', how the traditional family-owned Tengelmann Group has reinvented itself over the last 17 years, and how it responded to digitalization. "As one of the first German companies, we have been investing in promising digital startups over the last years already. In doing so, we do not only participate in the success of the startups that we have invested in. We literally learn about digital transformation ‘from the inside’ and derive strategic options for our core business", stated Karl-Erivan W. Haub.
 
That the support of promising startups and their new business models represents a win-win-situation for both sides – established firms and startups – was clearly pointed out in the following panel discussion on future trends in digital commerce and smart logistics. All panelists agreed that digital business models and new technologies are key drivers for ecommerce/retail and logistics.
 
The pitches of the four startups in the first STARBUZZ batch and the following panel discussion with the startups showed, how a successful collaboration with corporate partners already creates benefits for all involved parties. With entertaining and strong pitches, Kaufsafari (Duisburg), mindtainr (Dortmund), PaketChef (Munich) and replex (Duisburg) presented their startups in front of the expert audience.

Currently, STARBUZZ is selecting the second batch of startups that will enter the accelerator program in January 2018.

In a joint press conference, Tengelmann Group, Hochschule Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences, the City of Muelheim an der Ruhr and Muelheim & Business GmbH Economic Development Corporation have informed the news media on their collaboration in supporting STARBUZZ – the first independent accelerator for digital commerce and logistics startups. STARBUZZ at German Venture Day on April 6, 2017 in Düsseldorf

On April 6, we will present our accelerator program at German.Venture.Day 2017 in Düsseldorf. We are looking forward to fresh impulses, intense discussions and a great networking opportunity with startups, corporates and investors. The event is organized by Private Equity Forum NRW, a partnering organization of STARBUZZ.

Taking place for the seventh time, German.Venture.Day has truly become one of the leading events for the startup and venture capital scene in Germany. The main theme of this years’ event is “Germany on the move – wishes, values and goals of a changing (Startup)Society”. Leading representativesof the startup ecosystem, corporates and politicians gather on April 6 to exchange ideas and experiences. Interesting keynote speeches and a pitch of 10 startups that culminates in the awards ceremony of the German Venture Award 2017 are highlights of the event.
